Own the corners first
Corner cells can only be reached by the blocks touching them. Locking corners early shrinks the search space before the board fights back.
Build a cross, not a corner-to-corner path
Solving the center cross first gives every later rotation a stable reference — the single biggest move-count saver on 4x4 blocks.
Count backwards from solved
Elite solvers trace the target pattern outward — asking "what rotation produces this?" beats asking "what does this rotation do?"
